Fountains and C3 global to undertake Arboreal modelling on behalf of National Grid
C3 global and Fountains have announced that they are to work together on behalf of the National Grid for Arboreal Risk Modelling across the UK regarding there transmission lines.
Fountains specialists will be able to monitor and model the sidescreen growth rates of trees in close proximity to span lines, therefore predicting the minimum time before cutting needs to be undertaken. This information comes from Fountains domain expertise in tree growth rates, health, age, species, and weather. Of the 22,000 spans at present, 50% have vegetation, with between 1 and 100 individual items per span. This amounts to many millions of possible risks to the span lines.
Once implemented, the present 2 year cycle of tree inspections will be moved to a risk based inspection regime in which spans are visited less frequently for lower risk and more frequently if necessary for high risk, including side screen trees. This will lead to an increase the confidence in decision making and should allow for greater periods between inspections, only focusing on those assets which need attention most, as well as the ability to predict more accurately and reduce risk.
C3 global have been specialising in data collection, analysis, data modelling and prediction in the real time arena for a number of years, operating in a number of industry sectors. Recently this has involved deterioration modelling of the transmission towers for the National Grid involving processing weather, environmental and geospatial data through corrosion models. This has led to improved management of risk, streamlined scheduling of inspection and less downtime.
